Beside the
excellent satellite-photos, which you will find easily in the internet by the virtual
globe systems, there is no actual map known to us, that shows the Nanga Parbat region so
detailed and accurate, that a trekker or mountaineer could rely on it to break new trails
or walk alone.
The available maps show either only a specific part of the area, detailed, or are in a big
scale or abstract style.
We think, that the best map-set are the US Army U502 Series ( scale 1:250,000) which were
drawn around 1953. Some of this maps have been recently been issued in colour. This
maps are hard to find in Pakistan, so you must buy them at home.We have found the important U502 map,
"Gilgit" NI43-2, covering the Gilgit, Chilas and Nanga Parbat region, in the
Internet as a graphic-file ( 4,350x3,222pixels; 2,767,715 Bytes ). You will find the map
by use of the keywords: "india ni43".
Another very nice collection
of maps for the Kashmir- and Northern Areas we have found also in the Internet by the
keywords "maps kashmir".
You will find two very nice
satellite image maps: "Eastern section" shows the Baltoro-region, the
"Western section" shows the Nanga Parbat region. You can find the Nanga Parbat
by the coordinates: N35.236896 E74.592855
The very best overview about
the whole area we think you can get by the map "Kashmir Region 2004" (807,436
Bytes! ), which you can find in the internet by the keywords: "middle_east_and_asia
kashmir region".
We could not find any
information, whether this maps are restricted for public use, and although we tried hard,
we could also not find any information whether the important american universities (.edu)
have the legal rights to put this maps on their internet-website.
We are confident, that the famous universities have asured, that they are not violating
law, so we feel free to point to this documents. If you know better about the situation,
please let us know and we will immediately remove this addresses, in the case that the
