The very weather-exposed south-face of Nanga Parbat is reached by a jeep-road (public transportation services) leaving the Karakoram-Highway at Jaglot, following for about 10km the Indus and then turning into the 30km long Astor-Gorge with sheer sides. After the Astor-Gorge the valley widens up and it is 20km to Astor, which is bypassed from the road. From Astor the road leads 28km through Gurikot and Churit to Tarishing. The last part of the jeep-road is directly on the side of the Rupal River, so the road is very exposed to damages. In Tarishing (2.911m) there is a nice campsite with a small building that can be used for kitchen-purposes. From this campsite one has a nice view to the south-east-side of Nanga Parbat, specially to the ridge from Rakhiot Peak towards the Nanga Parbat summit, which is 12.2km away.

From Tarishing (2.911m) it is a four-hours walk to the Bazhin-campsite below the Bazhin-glacier. First one has to climb up steeply the moraine and then cross the 600m broad Tarishing glacier (Chhongphar-Chongra-Glacier) in about 30 minutes on a clear visible path. After the glacier the route passes the villages of Rupal and Upper Rupal, then the path climbs up steadily to a green valley with a spring and an small pond - a very nice area to be used as the campsite (3.650m), with superb views of the Nanga Parbat south-east face. This area is often called Herrligkoffer-Camp and can be used for an acclimatization - restday, although the next campsite at Shaigiri, the socalled Herrligkoffer-Basecamp at the Tup-Alp or at Shaigiri offers at the same altitude better opportunities - like a glacier lake nearby.
